At the UKRI Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (TAS) Functionality Node at the University of Bristol, we are a team of social scientists, ethicists, computer scientists and engineers working together to explore autonomous systems with evolving functionality – systems with the ability to change and adapt to suit different situations.
We are studying how the ability to evolve and adapt changes the way we:
- interact with and trust these systems (Ethics)
- specify their performance (Specification)
- verify their design and operation (Verification)
- regulate these systems (Regulation)
Our research focuses on three use cases:
These technologies all adapt in fundamentally different ways. This will allow our findings to be used across a wide range of different application areas. These systems are being studied to explore how they are developed and how features can be built into the design process to increase their trustworthiness.
